About the Organization:

African Community Housing & Development (ACHD) is a community-founded organization led by visionary Black women. ACHD works towards an informed African Diaspora immigrant and refugee community that is engaged in the holistic development of families, communities, and environment. ACHD focuses on equitable and culturally-relevant health, legal, and educational services; housing stability and economic development; and land-use, real estate, and property development.

ACHD understands the historical values and importance of organizing, strengthening, and honoring collective wisdom. ACHD collaborates with many organizations working on similar goals throughout South King County, including community-based organizations, small business owners, parent groups, and coalitions.

About the Position:

The African Diaspora immigrant and refugee community has a disproportionately high rate of contact with the justice system, especially youth. By providing holistic support to expunge records, help for families to knowledgeably navigate the justice system, and protecting community members from unjust evictions, ACHD seeks to increase opportunity and reduce injustice for our community.

Position Duties:

  • Serve as first point of contact for organizational and client legal issues
  • Provide culturally-responsive counseling for community members on all legal matters to ensure understanding of situations and available options
  • In partnership with Program Manager, lead ACHD’s new Drug Record Expungement program, and provide legal assistance to community members in need of record expungement
  • Represent community members in court when appropriate
  • Engage in non-litigation advocacy for community members, especially as relates to housing and evictions
  • Work closely with interpreters and case managers to holistically meet community member needs
  • Review occasional organization contracts and legal documents to ensure compliance

  • Required:
    • Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school
    • Washington State Bar membership in good standing or eligibility to waive in to Washington State Bar
    • 3+ years of criminal law and/or litigation experience
    • Ability to take initiative; self-starter
    • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
    • Ability to work compassionately and respectfully with diverse array of community members
    • Ability to handle multiple tasks and demands, establish priorities, manage deadlines, and work effectively in a energetic environment
    • Proof of COVID vaccination will be required
  • Preferred:
    • Experience working with the African Diaspora immigrant and refugee community
    • Experience with one or more of the following: drug/criminal record expungement, immigration and refugee law, fair housing/tenants rights/evictions, contract review

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position does not have any supervisory responsibilities.

Note: ACHD emphasizes a highly collaborative approach that is rooted in equity and co-learning. Supervisors are to lead with equity and humbleness, recognizing that each staff member brings a highly valuable and essential background and perspective. Accordingly, supervisors are also accountable to staff members, working to ensure they (supervisors) are meeting the needs of staff and providing a healthy and safe environment where feedback and learning is two-way. In other words, supervisors should work to build a positive environment where staff and supervisors learn together, and mistakes are considered a healthy part of personal and professional growth.
